    I think the most common method is wedges; what do you use? Do you reinforce the prod area?

    Depends on the style of tiller you create.  I've tied them on with sash-cord aka 550 paracord, using both the European style hole through the tiller and the Chinese dowel or bar through the tiller.  Both methods seem to work well.
