Hi everyone1 I'm Ed and I portray Leonardo da Vinci at the Greater St. Louis Renaissance Faire. I have been interested in crossbows for over 50 years. Due to some political upheavals in the RenFaire organization I am now the leader of the German guild--possibly the first time in history that the Germans have been led by an Italian.
Although I am the French King's painter (our Faire is set in France, 1518) my excuse for being in the German Camp is that I am a military engineer. I have set up a crossbow target made of styrofoam bead board covered with burlap and twice each Faire day I give a demonstration of my crossbow marksmanship (using one of David Watson's crossbows from New World Arbalest). In the same demo I also fire a wheelock pistol (invented by Maestro Leonardo in 1508 and made workable by German gunsmiths around 1515).
I also have a crossbow of Indian manufacture that has a steel prod and is crannquin drawn but I do not consider that bow safe to shoot yet. I took it out to my backyard range and after the first couple of shots the sear on the nut began to chip. I need to reenforce the nut and also cover the prod with a rawhide sichern.
I am interested in building a composite prod and have photocopied "Das Armbrust," a German language book on historic crossbows. When I have translated the appropriate pages to my satisfaction I will post them on this forum.
