man made material for reinforced socket Empty man made material for reinforced socket

Post by Lisjak Fri Apr 12, 2019 11:33 am

I am new to this forum . I have become interested in medieval crossbow since I have got Horenbogen armbrust book in my hands. Now I am thinking to make my own medieval crossbow. I have study some designs with nut socked reinforcement. Is there some man made material to make reinforced socked, since horn, bone are hard to find?
    Thank you for answers!

Well, you could use wood reinforced with steel sheets for that or just plain steel.

I have seen ivory micarta (bakelite) used successfully for lager-blocks reinforcing the roller socket.  It IS a bit brittle, but should do the job in most cases, and can be got in ivory or black, depending on your needs.  Geezer.

man made material for reinforced socket Empty Nut material

Hi, I have used Delrin with success for both the nut and the saddle it runs in.
This can be purchased on that well known auction website.
You can choose the diameter you want. It is acrylic based, turns well and comes in a variety of colours.
You will need a pressure wedge adding where the sear meets the nut.

There is a way to make a synthetic ivory out of potatoes. It starts with alternating dilute nitric and sulfuric acid washes, then stronger washes. Takes a long time for thicker pieces. Drawback is you end up with something highly flammable, the dust may be explosive. Think this is in the (nitro) cellulose family. Supposed to look like old ivory when done right. Mostly white with brownish streaks and patches. Polishes up like ivory, tough, strong.
