Question regarding the goat’s foot lever Empty Question regarding the goat’s foot lever

Post by Arcuballista Mon Nov 25, 2019 2:30 pm

I have searched the forum and asked the question in a topic on the goat’s foot lever before but I could not get any answers so maybe someone could help me out here Wink

I’m wondering if I need to get the steel hardened on a goat’s foot lever? Will it bend if not?

Possibily Tod Culter of Todstuff would sell you one.
I received one with my crossbow I purchased from him.

I'd rather be safe then sorry, I would harden it just in case. You already took so much work to make it why not take the precautions to make sure everything goes to plan?

Depends on the weight of your bow, how robust the lever is, geometry, pivot points etc.

Personally I would build a rough prototype in mild steel and see how it works, bearing in mind the sliding forks/prongs will be the weakest link if anything fails.

    HI

I have built 2 Goat foot Levers so far
My Prods are under 150 kg.
First was way over engineered and does not bend at all
Second I still used a 10 tone press to bend to shape and has 12mm thick x 6mm wide prongs.
This one still doesn't give when loading as you slide into the thickest part of the lever.

    Hope that helps.
