Question regarding the goat’s foot lever Empty Question regarding the goat’s foot lever

Post by Arcuballista Mon Nov 25, 2019 2:30 pm

I have searched the forum and asked the question in a topic on the goat’s foot lever before but I could not get any answers so maybe someone could help me out here Wink

I’m wondering if I need to get the steel hardened on a goat’s foot lever? Will it bend if not?

Your question, concerning hardening steel for a goatsfoot lever leaves a lot to be desired.  We have no idea how strong the bow is, or the dimensions of the lever itself.  I have seen plenty of levers made of mild steel that worked just fine without any special hardenering, whether heat-treating or hammering.  Having said that, hardening isn't likely to do any harm, and a good hard, well polished set of 'arms' on your goatsfoot should make it run more smoothly over the gafa-pins.  So if the metal is stout enough and the bow is not TOO powerful, you shouldn't need to harden. Does that help?  Geezer.
