Re: Drawing of Crossbow
use all available info and work from there.. if you have decent photos and basic measurements you can start and fill in the missings,, download the crossbow paper (forgot the name) as is has much more measurements on many crossbows..

Re: Drawing of Crossbow
Send polite, grammatically correct messages to the museums, explaining that you are interested in making a replica of a specific weapon, and asking politily if they could provide a few critical measurements.
Depending on the museum and the exhibit curator's interest and level of busy-ness you could get a wealth of information -- or a polite refusal.
I've done exactly this for two musical instruments I was interested in replicating. In one case I got detailed scientific photographs with measurements to the nearest millimeter. I the second case I got two critical measurements and one photo from which i could scale everything else.

Re: Drawing of Crossbow
I have written to numerous museums asking for detailed measurements and /or information on collection items and almost all have bent over backwards to help but you need to ask very specific questions. Don’t expect the curator of weapons to know anything about crossbows, they will not, never mind to understand the needs of a replica maker.
What are you making the nut from? The precise measurements of the replica I built depended entirely on the nut material. The antler I used could only make a nut of a specific size. In turn this determined the depth and width of the nut socket which decided the location of the tickler…course if you use Delrin none of that matters

Re: Drawing of Crossbow
If you know what the draw length will be, then you know where the centre of the nut must go. This corresponds to the fattest part of the tiller.the width of the nut gives the width of the bolt table and the width of the start of the spine inlay

Re: Drawing of Crossbow
Also, the length of the bow string matches the length of the tiller. This is where an email to the museum is helpful.

Re: Drawing of Crossbow
The Glasgow staff are brilliant, always really helpful. Is the prod from Jens steel? I guess if you are using a prod of a different length then a completely accurate replica doesn’t matter, and you should go with your drawings. Have fun, learn lots, keep asking us questions

Re: Drawing of Crossbow
My interest is in wood laths, wood/sinew composite and horn bows. I have pictures and measurements of the Glasgow yew bow and the Swedish yew/sinew bow.
