Hi guys, I'm presently at the drawing stage for a vertically mounted crossbow and I'm having difficulty with the trigger mech, how could i make it compact and reliable/solidly built? The drawings and pictures I have are from an SAS guidebook (a design built by Ivan Williams) but it doesnt show much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, just like this,I'm trying to keep the trigger case depth at 30mm to keep the overall look sleek, the one I've drawn is just too fat looking. Is this your design? if so, would you be willing to show your trigger off?

Not my design, just searched Google images for a vertical crossbow and that caught my eye. I think it's called a Mantis?

ok, I did a google search on Ivan Williams (he holds over 2000 patents) and found a crossbow that he designed in 1967 , it has a vertical mounted bow and a cocking device (which is similar to the russian strelitz, where the bow slides on a guide) anyway, a cocking device would be good, then I can up the power and do away with a stirrup. My builds end up different from the drawings so I'll see what happens

Mother Earth News did one where they converted a compound bow into a vertical crossbow. Used an aluminum tubing frame / stock as I recall. http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-it-Yourself/1987-03-01/Medieval-Modern-Crossbow.aspx?page=3

I think a trigger mech somehow similar to one they have in a roman ballista could do the work.. Here is one picture where it's scheme is easily seen.

on ebay in the used crossbows section, you can find a movie prop vertical crossbow complete with trigger arrangement. It was used in an early Star Trek shoot as a "klingon" crossbow....
you will have to search for it quickly as listing will time out.

That bow.............
Believe it or not...it has a rotating front.
It can be both - vertical...
...and horizontal.
From what I can see in the pictures, there are actually two triggers there, each for different barrel position.
I think the guys are on the right track with the ballista release. A claw released by sliding a shim from it's tail end.
Phil Abrahams is a pretty col gent when it comes to crossbows, isn't he? He's a member here and there is a Facebook page dedicated to his Talisman Crossbows. I'll see if I can get in touch with him again.
