Cheapest I found was a 2nd hand leaf spring from a VW Caddy. Payed more in shipping than the actual item cost  Rolling Eyes. Seller was totally honest with me, and the spring is some 150 cm (roughly 5 feet.), and weighs 13kg (28Ibs). "Great!", I thought, "Raw material for 2 prods!". Not so, thickness tapers towards the tips, close to 15mm at center, and down to some 10mm at the tips. Not sure it'll bend at all...

The raw material you want would be a spring off a real light trailer or I have seen people use springs off a golf cart. If you looked at an auto supply store for trailer repair. These are lighter made springs but, still a lot for pull weight.Just guessing ,about 1/4" thick and maybe 1/3/4" wide would be in the ball park.

I'd buy that. You could send a mean harpoon---with a message on it.Thing is ,     a rigged ballista as you showed could be dreamed into almost any kind of a launcher.Just dreaming here , but I'm serious. By the way I really don't care what someone else might think of our whaling adventure. If they can't dream ,maybe they can take a hike.
