I was thinking of using Alchem's design for an SCA type crossbow and saw it used a bolt 1.25" in diameter. That seems tantamount to shooting an axe handle downrange. Is there something wrong here? or is there a special purpose at work(LARP). I can't imagine the impact of a bolt that size on a deer. Broad heads are unnececerry, the concussion would do all the work.

Re: Alchem's SCA crossbow
Street sniper: Look closer. Larp crossbows are designed to shoot padded, large diameter bolts against human opponents. They have a maximum range of maybe 50 yards, and an effective range of half that. The 1.25 inch diameter projectile is made thick so it can't get through a helmet eye-slot. Of course they could wear goggles to protect their eyes, but that's another story. Geezer

Re: Alchem's SCA crossbow
Yes, SCA rules vary a bit from area to area, but generally speaking they don't allow more than 75 lb. of draw and 600 inch/pounds total power (measured by multiplying weight of draw in pounds by length of actual power-stroke (not counting brace-height) in inches. They engage in armored combat, so everybody has to wear a helmet, but oddly enough, goggles are not required inside your helmet. Instead, there's a 1-inch maximum width for eye-slots. So a 1.25 inch diameter projectile won't pass thru the slot. Note that projectiles aren't required to be 1.25 inch diameter over-all, but only at head and tail. There are several ways to do this, but in many ways, the most elegant can be found by looking up Baldar Blunts online.
So what does it feel like to get hit? Well, it hurts, about like a paintball, except there's no paint. Geezer

Re: Alchem's SCA crossbow
Actually, Alchem's SCA bow is just one variety of the the fabled Skane crossbow. It's very much a medieval crossbow, and you can build it strong enough to take game. For real bolts, you'd want to cut the bolt-groove a lot narrower, but in fact, it's a workable crossbow, just very-very simple! Geezer

Re: Alchem's SCA crossbow
If this is your first bow, Alchem's plan is a good way to start. I built my first from their plans. You can always modify what you want.
