14th Century pavise Empty 14th Century pavise

Post by BrianlaZouche Fri Dec 21, 2012 5:30 am

ok not actually a crossbow, but a very crossbow related item, = a crossbow mans pavise from the 14th century

having spent week doing web searches untill my brain drips out my eyes, i turn to you guys in the hope you may have information/ images you can share,

i'm hoping to construct a crossbow mans pavise suitable for mid 14th cent, all the web searches bring up 15th century ones, i know some will say whats the differance, but the very few early ones i have come across show them to me a lot more plainly deccorated than the 15thc examples,. but more importantly they do not seem to have the centeral ' gully' ie; they appear simple flat or slightly curved,

i do not follow the line of thinking that just becasue it was used in 1480 it would have been the same 140 years earlier

so i'd like to find as much information as i can before even attempting to make a copy of one

any help/ info/ ideas/ thoughts would be very welcome

but please NO 15th cent ones, as there are loads of those on the net

The first post on the link below shows one from 1400 and talks about earlier ones. I hope this helps.

    Brian,

Is is that you are looking for an extant example from the 14th C? Do you have any examples from 14thC art? I am having trouble bringing any to mind.

yes an extant one would be ideal. such as the Erfut ones,

i do have only 2 illustrations from that period showing what seems to be pavises but as you can imagine not an awfull lot of detail shown on them, ( will post them/ links here when i find my files )

Ferdinand,.... it may seem i want one without a gully, but thats not the case, what i really want to find out is what they actually looked like, if evidance of a mid 14th cent has gullys then thats great, ...what i dont want to simply ASSUME is that just because something looked like it did mid/late 15thc that they would have been the same 100- 150 years earlier

This is the one from the royal dutch army museum.
    Dated 1450 to 1500.
On it is st George, patron saint if knights, symbol of christisnity, battle, nationalism.
And he is slaying the dragon.
It is Bohemian in origin and in his chest is the crest of the bohemian city of Zwickau.14th Century pavise DSC_3094-114th Century pavise DSC_3093-114th Century pavise Mms_img-950260123
