Hi Everyone,  I'm building a new bench and would like to incorporate a spanning mechanism of some sort as my main interest is building wooden prods: would be glad of some design ideas

Happy New Year. You can set up a stationary cranequin or a goats foot lever. Maybe if you put the crossbow in a crate and put a dowel thru the crate so it can be spanned despite the crossbow not designed for the goats foot. Let us know what you come up with.

Are you going to use the spanning mechanism to tiller your wooden prods, or just to string them? I would think that would be a similar function. I have a rig I like a lot, it is essentially a heavy wooden cross mounted to a steel tool stand with a base plate. There are 1.5" oak dowels set into the arms to brace the ends of the prod, and I use a small scissor jack on the base to crank up the tiller until the prod is flexed enough to string. I strap the tiller to the upright of the cross to avoid dramatic accidents, and use a scrap of 1/4" board to leave enough of a gap between tiller and cross to fit the string. Let me know if that is hard to visualize, I can post an image if you are interested.

Payne Gallway has a description of a spanning bench in his book. He uses a bastard string with 2 fittings on the end to fix to the limb ends just befor the nocks and pulls it back with a cranequin.

This setup also works with the crossbow assembled.

Thanks guys, I need a set-up for tillering rather than stringing, though the two things are not really very different.  Some great ideas there, lots to think about
