    New crossbow builder

HI I'm William semi retired hobbyist just starting to plan a medevial crossbow build. My plan is to forge the arm from a light trailer axle spring. And possibly oak or poplar for the body.

William: go with oak or the tiller (stock) you'll find poplar easy to work, but probably too soft/weak to stand up to a stout steel prod.  Geezer.

What Geezer said.  He's the pro and in the know!  Poplar, even tulip poplar isn't strong enough to make a good tiller.  Go with Oak, it's historically correct, readily available, and makes a good looking tiller either blond or stained dark.
