Low Draw Weight Build Empty Low Draw Weight Build

    Post by ora8i Thu Aug 04, 2022 12:35 pm

    Evening All.

I'm tempted to do a low/very low draw weight bow, bundle prod, with a reverse draw in effect just a big pistol and little more than a toy.

As always the biggest issue is fabricating a lock I only have very basic hand tools so I need a design that is easy to build, safe and has a reasonably light trigger pull.

As I hope to build something like a pistol it would need a trigger rather than a long leaver, I have read here (thanks) that delrin with a steel insert should work for a nut but that is only part of it.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ToVGZSAWKJR4uDtd6_Uj1TYJlXttAann/view?usp=sharing

That mechanism is from Terry Stuarts book, if I were to lengthen the nut to bulk it up and move the cross pin (sear) away from the pivot is it likely to work?

I would like to laminate the stock is Marine grade plywood (hard wood no voids) a suitable material?

    Thanks All     Ora

If you're looking at under 80-100# draw weight, you won't need a steel insert in the Delrin.  That's just not that much stress.  You can replace the whole nut for less time and effort than drilling and inserting an steel pin/screw.

    Thanks Kieth.
That is the sort of draw weight I would be looking for, I'm in the UK so no bow hunting and realy no place were your allowed to shoot. I'm just looking at a fun build, I take it that Marine plywood will be Ok?
As it happens I have some 3030 aluminium extrusion leftover from a 3D Printer build I may include that for the bolt track.

Marine ply is fine if you like that sort of thing.
You might think about a bundle prod made from bicycle spokes...
Unless you want to just go through the motions, you won't need a metal bolt track, either, just a simple saw slot sanded round-ish.

For what its worth, a crossbow and bow builder here in Melbourne Australia in the mid 80's used the same trigger mech in the above link.

Great simple design that worked well.

The latch on his was shaped out of a single block of alli, and the sear pin was a 1/8 drill bit shaft loctited into place. Trigger blade sear was case hardened as per diagram.

    Thanks Andy.

I'm glad to know the trigger is OK and I'll probably use it.

At the moment I'm trying to prevent "project creep" I want to build a bit of fun but my eyes keep drifting to more serious bows things I could never shoot but are just so tempting and not much more trouble to build......

Thinking of building this mech myself as a replacement trigger on an existing bow.

Fyi... the sear surface on the trigger must be 90deg to its pivot point to be safe. This is not clearly indicated in the diagram.

There should be some clubs near you. National Field Archery Society encourages crossbows, club finder map shows half a dozen clubs between Liverpool and Manchester.
